I just stumbled on this thread. We attended the Binder Bee in 2010 and 2011. Antique Powerland was a pretty cool place to be at, but it is quite a drive from the SF Bay Area/Sacramento region....

Quite often, people 'fix' engine issues by increasing base ignition timing and/or increasing curb idle speed. The best practice is to identify and fix the issue(s) with the engine so the base timing...

When I needed to replace the camshaft (and cam bearings) in my 304 about 10 years ago, I ended up using a stock grind. I didn't want to change the hp/tq curves from stock, as my Scout's set up...

With my 304-powered Scout II, I get about 9-10 mpg towing my 3000+ lb sailboat/trailer combo that sits quite high. Normal 60 mph freeway mileage is around 14-15 mpg at around 2400 rpm.

80 miles...

Yes: check your speedo/odo accuracy with a gps, because you can never be certain any pos or their 'mechanics' didn't make any changes to speedo gears or drivetrain.

Your truck's color name is deep brown poly (aka: dark brown metallic) #1606. Trust me, I know. When I had two-stage paint (dupont chromabase) custom mixed to match the original paint on the door...

After looking at many of the newer tires, it is looking like there are less 15 inch tires and more 17 inch tires available for 4x4 vehicles.

You say that the engine starts with full/near full throttle, but runs poorly, with lots of smoke? Dark smoke? If so, it seems like raw fuel is moving from the fuel bowl directly to the throttle...

Make sure the choke system is adjusted/functioning properly. That includes the vacuum pulloff.
