T18 upgrade to T19?

The second gear syncro in the Scout's t18 is going bad. Also there is lots of slop in 3rd when getting on/off the throttle, but no ugly gear noises. A rebuild kit would probably allow me to get another 40 years of use out of it, however I am tired of the non-syncro 1st gear which has caused some problems when the Scout could not pull a hill in 2nd while pulling a load.

I have a 50k mile t19 that was behind a diesel that I believe is in good shape. It needs the adapter plate between the xmission and tcase and a motor mount.

The first question I have is the t18 or t19 the better transmission?

Will the bull gear from the t18 swap over to the t19?

Will any other changes need to be made to the drive shafts, transmission cover or anything else?

Other than the sync'd first the t-19 is the same trans, should bolt in without issue.

Well I can confirm that the exterior dimensions of the engines are not the same. The top of the t19 case is wider than the t18 case and the d20 will not mate up without some serious grinding. After my 3rd try it is almost enough. I sure wish that I tried to mate them while they were on the ground and not in the truck. That t case is awkward and heavy.

Also the transmission mount lines up perfectly with the cross member and it looks like no z plate will be needed, however that remains to be seen.

I got to spend a lot of quality time under the Scout this weekend. Yesterday I welded up the new clutch pivot ball to the frame. I decided not to remove the whole bracket and just cut the tab off with a grinder and welded the new tab on. While under there crawling around I found the left rear back spring perch was almost broken off the frame. Perhaps that is what that clunking was going around curves for all those years. We'll see now that it's welded up too.

Interesting I'm thinking about doing the same because of the synchroless 1st gear. Was the t19 you're using out of a Scout with a d20 behind it? I'm thinking the d20s should be the same, so don't get the mismatch. Maybe it had a d300 behind it?

I don't know, perhaps it did have a d300 since it was out of a 1980 diesel Scout. I hear you on the non-syncro first. You wouldn't think they'd change the case though. This case is dated in '79.

Completed the swap with a new/rebuilt clutch and I must say the results are very nice. The new trans is very quite and smooth shifting. It will take a bit of getting used to the shorter sifter and shorter throw on the shifts (I've been driving the t18 for 28 years). The truck now feels and sounds like a much more sophisticated sports truck.

The only issue is that the tail of the transmission now sits a bit higher than before and the exhaust on both sides rattles on bumpy roads, which is most of my driving.
