Default Interchangable rear end for 64 C1300

I have a 1964 C1300 dually flatbed 1ton I just bought off my grandfather. It is barn fresh, so I am starting to do some work to it. I want to buy a whole new rear end becuse it is geared so low from stock. Does anyone know what other rears I can buy that is interchangeable!

Welcome to the forum. Have you given any thought to the possibility that if you re-gear much higher, your engine/trans combination might have a tough time getting that truck moving from a dead stop, especially if it is carrying a load? What are your plans for this truck? How do you intend to use it? What engine and trans does it have in it? Have you identified the current axle model and gear ratio? It helps yourself and anyone else reading to have as many facts as possible.

Scoutboy74, thank you much for the heads up! My intentions with the truck is to restore it and eventually show it. Sadly, the 64 is is still in my grandfathers barn and I live in another state. Looking to having it hauled early in December so that I can get started on it. As for now, I don't have all the info, but I know that he said the top speed is 50mph because it is geared so low. I know it is a 4 speed on the floor and he thought it was a 304. I was trying to get a heads up so I could start getting parts, but I may have been a little premature. As soon as the info I will inform! Thanks!

Well then, a gearing change is probably in order. Do you know if it has dual wheels, ie a dually? IH put a number of different axle configurations under these trucks over the years, often depending on what the original purchaser specified. With the vintage of this truck, it is likely to have what's known as "the Big Six" wheel lug pattern, which is an obsolete pattern in so far as it comes to sourcing aftermarket wheels. Speaking of wheels, it probably has the split rim variety, which almost no tire shops anywhere want to touch with a ten foot pole for liability reasons. The front axle will be a solid I-beam. Is originality, or at least the appearance of originality a concern to you? The simplest way to accomplish getting some numerically lower gears in this truck along with some more modern wheels could boil down to sourcing axles from a later model ChryFordrolet with 8 lug rims. But we'll just have to wait until we can get a comprehensive assessment of what you actually do have before any real advice can be given.

Great! Thanks for the help friend! Yes, it is a flatbed dually. And yes, it is a solid front axle. It has always been used on his farm and only has 18k miles on it. I would like to keep it as original as possible, however I know axle configuration change is a must. Is there several different models that are generally enterchangable?

Looks like a pretty straight old survivor. I don't have a copy of the parts catalog for that model year, but at the time, there would have been a couple or even a few different rear axle choices for a 1-ton truck with both single and dual wheel arrangements based on the gross weight rating. 50 plus years down the road, if you're looking to make a pavement pounding show queen out of it, like I said before, you'll probably be hitting salvage yards and Craiglist ads to find axles out of something more up to date and higher geared from one of the Big 3 makers.

im far from an expert, but it it was me(had the parts to do it to a 73 RCLB) snag the front/rear end out of a 1990-2000 CHevy C3500HD . Its a Cab and Chassis truck(5 lug front 10 lug rear{i forget the pattern off top of my head}) you will have modern brakes (large disc on all 4 corners) and all parts are availebel from GM and other sources.

or if you want to o the Ford route a F450/F Superduty(mid 90's????) cab and chassis truck i beam and dually wheels, uses a 16 inch wheel

or if you like dodge the newer ram 4500 2wd far as i know is a ibeam front end as well. if you want 4x4 then you have a TON of options. hope this helps.

Thanks for your help 1hc72! That really gives a lot of options. I didn't realize they were that interchangeable.

Check measurements, unless You know how to weld, then any of those will work, and be easier to find voters, and wheels
