Default 1977 wiper worries

Hi guys!

So I'm really enjoying the new (to me) 77 traveller I picked up. I'm working through the issues it's got and I've got a list, and one major concern is the wipers.

When they work it's intermittent and kind of terrible. Also it seems that they have an effect on the charging system, when they move back and forth there's a distinct pinging sound and the charge meter on the dash dips significantly.

I picked up a new washer motor, and a blade and arm conversion kit I just need to know if this is a common issue and if so what else needs replacing? Is there an electric conversion for the 77? I can only find them for scouts up to 71. It seems like the wiper motor is shot but I don't know for sure

Thanks guys!

Sounds like there might be a short in the motor, unless the linkage is binding.

Electric conversion??? They're already electric. The wiper motor most likely needs to be rebuilt or swapped out. What "new" motor did you get? Pretty much the only motor that works fo rthe overall SII configuration and wiring is an SII motor. There really isn't a practical aftermarket replacement.

Thanks for the advice guys, scout boy sorry for the misunderstanding I thought I bought a new motor but it was my mistake and I accidentally got a washer motor a big derp on my part

Suppose I'm going to take the motor off and dissect it

The weird thing is that it works intermittently and seems to have a heavy draw on the power system

Yeah, that's just its way of telling you that its feeling poorly. You'll soon find out that accessing the wiper motor is a fairly involved process. Hopefully your cowl panel above it is removable via some phillips head screws.

So the panel under the hood directly forward from the wipers is all screws I guess I'm going to take it off and start exploring., I'll take pictures and update the thread asap.

If I need to rebuild it what does that involve? Or if it needs a replacement do you know a good source for one?

Do you know of any good, electric motor repair shops in your area? Best would be to pay a professional to overhaul it for you, unless you're good with small motor repair. You could make things worse. There are no new replacements. There are only used motors from other Scouts, which could be in better, the same or worse shape as what you have. There's no "rebuild kit" for them. It basically involves careful disassembly, armature cleaning, bearing lubrication and careful reassembly. That's an oversimplification of the process. Even the factory service manual if you happened to have your own copy does not cover how to service the SII wiper motors.

From the OP's description of high electrical load on the system, I'd hazard a guess that one of the windings is shorted. Rewinding a motor is a rather challenging task. Hopefully it is just a short in the brushes or something. We won't know for sure until it's disassembled and we get a report or photo's on the findings.
