Default New to Bay Area SD33T Registration Questions

Just moved to the bay area, my 1980 Scout II sd33t is still back east. I was thinking of pulling the motor and having a v8 dropped in but I was told that May screw me if I try and register her out here. Instead it was suggested I leave it stock for that purpose.

Does anyone have any experience in this area, advice would be good before I dive in the deep end.

Obliged

If it is still running with the diesel, I would register it first. If it is currently registered in you home state, you should be able to just take the paperwork down to the dmv and register it. It should not require a smog check at that time or at a later date. Believe it is somewhere around 98 and after that you have to get diesels bi-annualy checked for smog in CA. I have an 84 diesel suburban and never have to get it smog checked - main reason I still have it.
