Exclamation 1958 IHC A-130 Pickup -- Steering

I recently acquired this pickup, which has ridiculously LOW mileage and runs great, suspension checks out solid, plus new shocks, new tires, etc., but steering is a REAL BEAR TO PARK, MANEUVER AT LOW SPEED. It has about 2 inches of play in the steering gear box First, is it normal for this to be incredibly hard to steer at low speed? Is play normal. I just wanted to see if what I am dealing with is just acceptable '50s technology, or a unique problem that I should be able to correct?

My suspension/steering guy opened up the steering gearbox and it looked okay, and he adjusted as tightly as he could but it still has play. Despite low mileage and thus little wear, something may need to be rebuilt, so he is going to take it apart and we will see.

Has anyone installed an ELECTRIC STEERING ASSIST unit on a vintage IH vehicle?

Finally, I do get the occasional DEATH WOBBLE (unbalanced washing machine effect), but at LOW speed. Hoping that correcting the steering issue will be the final step in eliminating this problem

To find the steering problem have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth and look for where the play is.

On the death wobble, are the original bias-ply tires still on it? They can flat spot real bad. Lots other things may be the issue, but let's start there.

thanks, I replaced the tires so no flat spots, and it rides nicer ---
but still have the episodes of wobble, hoping that fixing the steering will help.

Look forward to any other suggestions or feedback!!
