Default 266 vs 304

Ok I am new to the scout and am currently working on rebuilding a 1967 scout for my wife. I took the motor out and the head has a crack in it. I have read on previous forums that parts are more easily found for the 304 V8. I currently have a 266 V8. My question is should I just get a rebuild kit for the 266 or can I just get a 304 and put it in instead? Or is that even possible without a whole lot of modification? I found a 1980 304 rebuilt for $680 and I figure the 266 rebuild kit will be more expensive than that. Like I said Im new to the scout family and any help would be much appreciated.

the 304 is a bolt in replacement for a 266 if the it came from a scout.

Thank you! Thats what I thought Ive read before. One other question before I buy this engine. I have found cylinder heads for the 304 but have not been able to find them for the 266. Would a 304 cylinder head fit onto a 266?

the intake manifold and head gaskets are the same, but the combustion chambers on the 266 may be smaller.

The SV-266 bore diameter is 3 5/8"

The SV-304 bore diameter is 3 7/8"

A 1/4" difference.

The heads would bolt on, but with the larger combustion chamber size of the 304 heads, you would be losing mucho compression. Plus, the exposed top edge of the cylinder would be likely to cause pre-ignition when warmed up, IMO.

Find a good SV-304 and bolt it in.
