Default Improving T-18 shifter throw?

So I've got a 1974 Scout II 4x4 with a 304 and T-18 transmission. Granted... I'm still getting used to driving the beast, but it seems the gear shifter throw is really loose and it's easy to hit reverse when you're aiming for 3rd gear. IS there a way to tighten this up? Thanks!

Experiance, or change to a T-19 where reverse is next to 4th. My wife used to hit reverse when going to 3rd a lot. The T-19 is a lot quieter and has a syncro for 1st gear too. Mine came behind a diesel 6 cylinder so the shifter is shorter which tightens up the pattern a bit.

You can remove the shifter assembly and replace the worn parts.

IH used to sell a small parts repair kit just for this.

If there is no spring resistance against going into reverse than most likely the lock out spring has broke. We carry replacements on the online store - Reverse Lock Out Spring for Borg Warner T18, T19 or T98 4-Speed Transmission

Also, if the shifter is sloppy in the hole where it "rotates around a little" than that means the locating pin is worn and needs to be replaced. We do not carry those but will chop down an equal size drill bit shank to use as a replacement. We prefer a drill bit over a bolt since a drill bit is extremely hard and less like to wear like a normal bolt.
