Default clicking clunking at rolloff

figured i put this in the axle forum as the noise seems to be coming from there.

'79 sII, 345, t19, ~125k orig miles, dana 44 rear end (no work to rear end), 4" rc lift, 5" cpt shackle kit, 31" tires.

the noise began recently, i get a clicking or clunking as the clutch engages and i begin to roll. seem to be coming from the rear end.
it seems to only happen when i begin rolling from a stop. i watched underneath as my wife began to roll and could not see anything. thought it might be a little axle wrap, a bad u-joint or gears. i don't see anything jumping or skipping. everything looks tight.

i'm basically parked for the winter so i'll take a closer look over the next few months. in the meantime, any thoughts?

It is difficult to troubleshoot vehicle noises by text. It is also difficult to isolate the noise when inside the moving vehicle. You just have to check everything one-at-a-time until you find the culprit.

Seeing as your Scout II is lifted, I suspect u-joints first.

That being said, the first thing that I would do is to remove the rear drive shaft and inspect each u-joint for play. If either one has ANY play, I would replace them both.
Also inspect the slip joint for wear and be sure it is getting lubed frequently.

This is assuming the Transfer Case is in "2HI" and the front axle lockouts are both in "free" position, so the front drive shaft and axle are not engaged.

thanks. i'll check those items as noted. hoping it is as simple as a u-joint. i know it's tough to troubleshoot over a forum. hell, i couldn't see anything underneath it and in person.

the front axle is free and the the x-fer case is in 2 hi. over the next few months i'll take a closer look. we have snow and this is summer vehicle so it's sits in the garage. i'll report back.
