Default Greg R's 79' Scout II

This project was started last November with the arrival of two donor Scout's. For this project we are going to build up a Scout II for our customer greg who brought us two 79' Scout II's that once belonged to his father. Both had been sitting in a field for 10 plus years before they came to us. One was rolled. The other had been thru a flood and a firewall fire. Basically one had a good body, the other the drivetrain so both Scout's were combined into one.

In this corner we have the drivetrain donor.



Once involved in a roll over the body was toast however it did still have a running 4bbl 345 with a 727 automatic.



Before work could start the colony of spiders had to be dealt with. A can of bug spray cleared most of them out.



Here we have the body donor. This Scout was originally driven by greg's father until it was parked out in the field some ten years ago due to mechanical problems.



Aside from some front fender damage the Scout body itself is fairly straight.



Unfortunately the interior and dash had seen better days. After years of storage out in a field and having been thru a flood the interior was mostly not recoverable.



Plus a dash fire had burned up the wiring under the dash and then some.





Only big spiders make cob webbs that big.

After sitting for ten years these old engines need to be brought back to life gingerly. After first priming the oil system we then installed a fresh carb, hooked up a fresh fuel source and after a short while we were able to get the old 345 running once again.







Next up was an evaluation of the under carriage.



You definitely didn't have to be told that this thing was just pulled from a field.











With the evaluation over it was time to make a plan.

First thing to do was remove the good drivetrain from the red donor Scout.



The front clip was removed to make removal a little easier. Plus we're going to need some of these parts a little later.



Once removed the drivetrain was rolled outside.



So that things like this rats nest and greasy transmission could be cleaned up.





Once cleaned up the drivetrain was brought back inside and set on our work table so that things like the transfer case seals, engine freeze plugs, engine tune, etc could be changed out.






After getting the interior cleaned out and a decent pressure washing the blue Scout was brought in. We also had received the new wheels and tires and promptly installed them to make moving the Scout a little easier.



With the Scout up on the lift it was our first chance to see how the overall condition of the axles, frame, etc were.

The fluids were drained out of the transmission and transfer case before being removed.



Some pretty nasty stuff was in there.



Hard to tell but that's a rats nest up in there above the transmission.



Darren got suited up in order to stay safe will cleaning out the old rat homes.





While on the lift the differentials were inspected. As you can see from the deep sludge deposit this axle was in need of a full rebuild.





As seen in the picture the ring gear had suffered some deep rust pitting so it was determined that the axles from the red Scout would be the better axles to use.

With the prognosis of the blue Scout done the red Scout was brought back in so that the frame, axles and inner fenders/right outer fender could be retrieved.





The frame was unbolted and body lifted up off the frame.





I don't know about you but when I look at this picture I get that fuzzy claustrophobic feeling that I am in a cave and the stalactites are going to get me!



With the frame rolled out of the way the body is carefully rolled outside out of the way as well.





Before getting started on the mechanical restoration of the axles and chassis michael gives it a good pressure washing.

As more cleaning and prepping of parts we came across this bee hive as well as a sprout garden growing beneath the cowling.



With the inner and outer fenders removed they were cleaned and set aside.



The blue Scout was then rolled back in.....



.....and body removed from its frame.



While we had access it was decided now would be a good time to deal with some rust that was discovered in the rear bed area.



A patch panel was made and then transcribed onto the body.



Rusty section being cut out.



And finally removed.



With the new patch welded in place it is next painted with primer to prevent it from further rusting again.

To begin the reassembly the drivetrain was dropped into the chassis.





A slew of parts still await installation. The radiator and fuel tank were sent out and reconditioned. Much of the brake and steering parts were replaced.



After installing the fuel tank and lines the body was set down on the frame.



The stock worn out leaf springs were replaced with 2.5" Rough Country springs and nitro shocks.



CPT heavy duty 5" shackles were installed both front and rear. The front ones are designed to retain the Scout's factory flat swaybar.





The steering box was also replaced as well the draglink.



Moving back to the inside of the Scout the dash was removed for a better look at the dash wiring. We knew it had been thru a firewall fire but we didn't know that it was this bad.



The burned up firewall pad had to be removed as well as all the wiring as most of it was burned up.

After a short hiatus it was time to get the Scout up to a point where it could be driven. So we assembled the crew on a recent Saturday and went to work on the Scout with goal of driving it out of the shop by the end of the day.



Both front inner fenders from the red donor Scout were installed as they were in better shape than the blue ones.



The under the dash parts were installed first before the dash itself went in.



The red Scout's outer fender went on and needed a little tweaking.





Darren worked on getting the dash from the red Scout installed into the blue Scout and wired so that we could get the engine fired up.





Not too shabby with all things considered!



After a long the day the Scout is ready to be started.



Ten years of sitting and two Scout's later and success was called after a test drive down the driveway and back.



Stay tuned as plans are for a paint job and completion of the interior in the very near future.

All I could find in my records was that they were a procomp tire and wheel package 31x10.5x15 tire 15x8 wheel. Sorry but I don't have any more information then that.

Maybe it's just me, but I really like the faded weathered look of that truck with the rally stripe.
Looks like it would be fun to just drive it!
