Default Proper oil for 1961 scout 152 cu in with oil bath filter.

I have a 1961 Scout 80 I just got running and can not seem to find the specs for the proper oil weight. I know it is important for proper operation of oil bath filter but can't find it in the thread. Can anyone post a link to the right info? Thanks a ton.

I'm surprised that no-one has replied to your question....it is actually very basic. With the oil bath air cleaner you have, you do not need any oil which is exotic or specific to weight. Any inexpensive engine oil will work. Some even do not use engine oil.

Thumbs up Re: Proper oil for 1961 scout 152 cu in with oil bath filter.

Thank you df, my thought was to just use the same engine oil for the oil bath since there is a vent tube connecting the oil fill to the oil bath air filter. I was actually looking for the specs for the correct engine oil for the 152 cu in engine. But thank you for the info, it was very helpful and useful.

If you want to get your oil at the local wally-world, 30wt is the only one which will have close to the correct additives for these engines. If you are in a cold climate or just want a thinner oil, an additive is highly recommended. This one for example... swepco 502 engine oil improver - pint - IH Parts America

Sorry for the confusion, I thought you were looking strictly for an oil for the oil bath air cleaner.

Please go back and read some of the previous entries regarding engine oil and note that even though the recommendation was for 30wt oil (which was the best at the time), the oil industry has improved dramatically and the newer multi-weight oils will offer more protection than the straight 30 weight oils did. Most Scout people that I know are using 15w40 or 20w50 (preferably swepco 306 engine oils), an sl rated oil, which you need to use in your engine. Sl rated oils are getting harder to find, and swepco continues to produce it for the older equipment such as yours.

The recommendation of using swepco 502 oil improver can be applied with every new oil change, it will increase the zddp by about 175ppm for every 5 quarts treated. The newer sm and sn ratings only have 800 max zddp, so that would raise it up to slightly less than 1,000ppm. The 306 engine oil has 1,700 ppm (+ -).

These products are used by and recommended by IHPA and are available in the purchase section of the website.
