With the trench dug things were looking good.

Until we noticed that we trenched right across my leach field for my septic system.

We also clipped a main water line. I knew this was going to happen as I had no previous knowledge of its exact whereabouts.

We also located the electrical heading out to the barn. fortunately we still have power out to the barn.

So a trip to town was made for more supplies. We needed some sand, conduit, pvc, infiltrator and drainage pipe.

Of course when you bring home big bags of sand kids will find out and start building sand castles.

Here you can see conduit being layed in the trench and then sand shoveled around it.

With not much going right this day we also had a problem with using the trencher around our freshly dug out wall footing. After some trial and error it was decided to abandon the digging of the building footing and concentrate on the wall itself. Since the pad needed to go down another 4"(we thought we had the pad height right but realized we miscalculated) Darren used the trencher to slightly dig up the rock hard soil so that it could be dug down later.

At the end of the day I had Darren digging me out a trench for a hose bib when the machine broke. Sorry no pics of the carnage.

With the trencher returned back to the rental yard we headed over to 84lumber and loaded up on rebar.

We made a quick work shop out of the car trailer and began cutting and bending the rebar to length.

Darren bent the #5 rebar off of the trailer itself saving us the cost of buying or renting a rebar bender.

With the rebar done it was all layed out along the length of the footing.

With line up marks painted on the surface of the soil set up of the rebar began.

Chad stopped by and jumped in and helped finish out the day with us.

Here's a shot of all the rebar installed. Can you say "over engineered!". Looks like a dam caltrans operation.

With more building materials on the way it was time to spread out the road base. The yard in general had become so dusty(like living on mars with the red soil and all) that it was a relief getting this accomplished.

With the road base down the first load of materials showed up - the block for the retaining wall.

I also brought in some more keystone so that I could continue to work on the rv pad/garden shed retaining wall.

With the county inspector giving us the ok it was time to pour some concrete.

The pre-meeting.

With the first lower section of the footing poured Darren followed behind with a concrete vibrator in order to make sure no air pockets were left in the concrete.

And then the sun came up!

While Darren vibrated the concrete myself, Dad and willy continued on with the pour.

Pretty soon we had spectators.

My neighbor clyde cam over to check on progress as we had coordinated our schedules as he also had some concrete to pour over at his place.

The night before the pour I worked late and got the garden shed pad formed up in case we had extra concrete. Well we had more than enough so clyde, his finisher(I forget his name) and willy poured out the garden sheds pad.

With the concrete trucks gone it was time to lay down the first row of block especially while the concrete was still wet.

Continuing on with the first row of block.

Willy bringing out more block.

A quick walk down the footing and all looked well.

After what seemed like a long day(we were done for today by noon) the first row was set.

The following weekend(or should I say last weekend) Darren, willy and myself began laying down the next few rows of block.

Yes beers were consumed in the building of this wall.

Playing a cruel joke on willy(no more beers in the 6pack holder).

Work continuing on the wall.

Yet another day where we worked from sunrise to sunset.

The following morning it was time to install more rebar before we could lay down another row of block.

By the end of Sunday we had 4 rows out of 9 done(85' long wall). Not bad for some guys who are not masons by any means.

This week I had to go buy some more bags of mortar. I also picked up some more keystone garden block. If everything goes to plan willy, Darren and myself hope to have this retaining wall finished up by the end of the weekend.

Dang!! That's a lot of block for sure. I just built a small 5 block high 20' wall for my Dad and that sucker kick my butt. 85' 9 blocks high. you and your crew are going be some tired mofo's thats for sure. Looks like your not buttering each block, but maybe using a cake bag to for filling in between?

At least the weather will be cooling down in a day or two, but you might be done at the rate you guys are building.

Looking good

The first few rows had a sag down the middle that we finally got corrected by the 5th row. Really the picture makes it look crooked but its actually coming out as straight as can be. This has definitely been a learning experience but it is cool to say that we built the shop that we will be building scouts out of.

Thanks Craig, yes I am sore as hell, missing some skin on my fingers too but its a good sore feeling. One more day at it and the wall will be done. Doesn't matter how hard we tried all we can do is 2 rows per 10 plus hour day.

Yes a lot of green juice has been consumed on this project!

The following week end work resumed on the wall.

Keep in mind it was September and hot so water was being sprayed frequently in order to keep the wall and ourselves cool.

Ahh! A much needed break.

Here I'm notching the wall in order to lay down some more rebar.

Another day spent working from dawn until dusk.
