Default Re: PD's Drivetrain Upgrade

Next up was fabrication of the crossmember. The crossmember was attached at two points since this drivetrain was extra long due to the Klune-V.

With the crossmember complete it was on to the plumbing. Darren started running all the brakelines, ARB lines, vent lines, and hydraulic lines to the steering assist ram.

You can see in this picture the ram hydraulic lines running up the track bar which keeps them out of harms way.

Fabrication of the roll cage also began. To keep welding sparks, dust, etc out of paul's Scout we pulled out one of our orphaned Scout's from the side yard and began building the cage there.

Getting back to the crossmember an aluminum skid plate was added to help protect the transfer case. A rubber snubber was bolted onto the skid plate to help keep the drivetrain from flexing.

Next up was the exhaust system. Seeing that space was tight under the Scout we decided to go with flowmasters hushpower mufflers as they are a nice compact straight thru designed muffler that has a built in heat guard to keep things from getting hot around it.

Darren then began running tubing. A crossover was added for better flow as well.

At this point we are for the most part caught up with this build so I thought I would throw in a few random pictures.

Here's the fuel tank before installation. Darren did the normal modifications to it in order to accept an in-tank fuel pump.

Picture of under the hood while getting things buttoned up.

We took a few days off for the IH Sierra Fall Rallye. The Scout wasn't complete enough to make the 65 mile trek under its own power so we had it towed instead.

So as of today there still is quite a list of tasks to still yet get accomplished. Stay tuned for the next update where we hopefully get this project completed and delivered.

After some discussion Darren and I decided that the batteries would go down low and in front of the rear tires.

With the battery holders mounted Darren then fabbed up some covers to keep mud/water and such off of the battery as much as possible.

A mounting post was added to the battery holder in order to attach the covers.

Batteries in and installed.

Studs were welded onto both the frame and body so that the battery grounds would never be an issue.

A positive post was added under the front fenderwell in case a jump start is ever needed.

Parking brake cables were routed over to the left side and attached to the front cable to complete the parking brake setup.

The doors were removed and holes drilled in preparation for the power windows.

The cruise control module was reattached and new speedometer cables were installed.

The ARB compressor was installed on the passenger side of the engine bay.

High temp reflective wrap was put around some crucial lines and wires to keep them from melting due to being so close to the header.

Each rear corner of the Scout got a protective tube added to it.

The hardtop was hoisted off so that the new roll cage could be fitted.

Couldn't resist taking a picture of paul's Scout next to a stock Scout when we happen to have these two rigs side by side.

With the cage out of the mock up Scout Darren began the task of finishing it up.

First Darren cut pieces of tube and bent up some of them for gussets.

Next these pieces were cut to size and notched and tacked into place.

Once in place all were welded in.

With the cage complete it was cleaned(etched) and painted.

Once the paint was dry the cage was hung from the rafters and carefully dropped into place.

Before dropping the hardtop down Darren took the Scout out in front of the shop for a quick test of the ARB's.

Oops! Backing up a little bit I wanted to show what the shifters came out like.

We took a stock Scout II shifter, added an extra gate for the extra gear and added back-up and starter safety switchs to it.

This a picture of the shifter in reverse depressing the back-up light switch.

This picture shows the shifter in park. You can see the bump on the switch that the shifter contacts in order to complete the back-up light circuit.

This is a picture of the neutral safety switch in the park position. There are two bumps on the side of the shifter that depress the lever on the switch. When the switch is engaged in either park or neutral it completes the starter circuit allowing the engine to turn over.

Next Darren fabbed up a bracket to hold the Klune-V shifter in place.

Boots were added to all three shifters.

And topped off with the slightly modified trans shifter cover. Note the shift pattern as it includes an od spot.

Some pics of the rollcage with the hardtop bolted down and interior panels in place.

Bushwacker fender flares were attached to the Scout.

As I write this Mike the painter is outside giving the Scout some shine.

This next week the Scout will get finished. With a list of less than 10 things left to complete it is finally winding down. Paul is scheduled to pick up his ride next Friday. I'll update the thread after that.

After 2200 miles over 3 days the Scout finally made it back to tn. As promised I ran it across the scales just to see what it would weigh in at...6220 lbs. With 15 gallons of gas and a spare tire on board. Even with that the Scout cruised at 80 mph without breaking a sweat.

I can't say enough about the work Jeff and Darren put into this build and how well it turned out. That probably doesn't come as much of a surprise to those that are used to seeing what they do, but it left more than a few absolutely speechless during the drive back to tn. I haven't left a gas station (still the scouts favorite stop ) or parking lot yet without at least one person coming up and asking about it.
