Jamie's Diesel Scout II

10 Attachment(s)
We started doing some work on Jamie's 1978 Nissan diesel powered Scout back in January of 2010. This Scout started as a non-turbo powered diesel with stock suspension. We started initially with some suspension work as the current suspension had seen better days and will start the build here.

Here's the Scout in its stock form sitting on jack stands prior to the tear down.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545341

As you can see the suspension was in sad shape with a broken main leaf spring.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545341

Next the leaf spring were removed both front and rear.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545341

Followed by the front spring hangers as a reverse shackle kit is going to be installed.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545341

A lay out of the parts to be installed. We have 2.5" Rough Country leaf springs, CPT reverse shackle kit, CPT SUA Ubolt plate kit w/ 5/8" ubolts and some real smooth riding Bilstein shocks.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545341

We always start the install of our reverse shackle kits by first assembling the front spring hangers.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545341

This makes installation much easier and more accurate.

The front hangers are welded in and leaf springs installed.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545760

Once installed everything is painted.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545760

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545760

While we had the rear axle apart we fixed a issue known well to these Scout's and that is a bent axle housing.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545760

An alignment bar is inserted thru the housing using the center line of the mock carrier bearings.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545760

The end of the axle housing is cut off and then welded back on in order to put everything back on center.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382545760

With the housing straightened out it was reassembled and installed back in along with the new springs and shocks.

Here's the Scout with it's new upgraded suspension.

Then in July Jamie brought the Scout back up for another round of upgrades. The front bumper had a winch mount and guard added to it.

On-board air was installed.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546144

Rocksliders, corner guards and a custom rear bumper were fabricated as well.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546144

ARB's and lower axle gears were installed.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546144

Here's the rear tire carrier all decked out with spare tire, gas can, hi-lift jack, chainsaw and license plate holder/light.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546144

Looking real good with all it's new bumpers and sliders!

In the first picture you can see how the bumper was originally. We cut the top hoop off of it and then added in the new hoop and winch mount. Otherwise yes we could make another one. If interested please call for a quote.

A few weeks ago jaime brought the Scout back to us for another round of upgrades. He also brought us this beautifully rebuilt sd33t Nissan turbo diesel to put in place of the aging naturally aspirated one that had racked up many a mile.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

These engines come with new injector pumps and turbo and are full of oil as they have been test ran before being shipped.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

The Scout was pulled into place and the swap began.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

After a few hours the old power plant was hanging from the hoist.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

With the new replacement engine nearby all needed parts were transferred from the old engine to the new.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

With the parts transferred over the engine was readied for install.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

Up and over!

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546558

And all bolted in!

With the new engine it was time for some performance goodies. Darren fabricated a custom cold air intake for the new engine as cold air flow into a diesel is critical in keeping exhaust gas temps in check.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

Mandrel bent 3" exhaust tubing was used to creat the custom intake.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

A hole is cut right behind the headlight area so that the cone air cleaner can get as much fresh cool air as possible.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

A little closer look.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

With the intake side of the engine done it was time to move onto the exhaust side. Darren fabbed up a nice free flowing 2 1/2" exhaust system that should keep things flowing efficiently.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

A flex joint was installed to keep the exhaust system flexible within the chassis.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

A nice big free flowing muffler will keep the noise levels in check while making as much power as possible.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382546873

The tail pipe was routed and trimmed to help prevent it from getting smashed. Between the bumper and side guard it is fully protected.

Another upgrade while the Scout was here was a 1800 watt power inverter.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382547222

1 gauge battery cables were carefully routed.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382547222

Something that we did not show you earlier was the air tank for the on-board air system so here it is.

http://forums.IHPartsAmerica.com/att...1&d=1382547222

Currently the Scout is waiting for a custom built fuel filter that will encompass a fuel heater, water separator and electric priming pump. More on the filter once it arrives and we get it installed so stay tuned!

Where did you get that rear bumper and rear corner guards? I really like the chainsaw mount, I could use something like that.

Just as the build up says we fabricated these items in house. If you are interested in custom fabricated items like what seen here it is best to call our sales office to go over options and rough pricing.
