Engine Swap Options

Ok so I've tried to search but haven't come up with a lot of direct answers. So here we go, im looking at buying a Scout this weekend. Its late model diesel. Great shape but one down side. The sd33 is gone.. Someone took it for their truck go figure!! Well as much as I love to keep it a diesel putting the sd33 back in it or do a 4bt swap. That's not really cost effect at this moment.. So what are my options? I'd love to keep the drive train and just put a different engine in it. But is that even possible.. What can I do guys? I don't want to buy this thing an be stuck. Although I wouldn't be 100% stuck, because I know I can rip everything and go from their. But again not looking to do that..
Thanks guys

Any of the IH motors are a direct swap. 304, 345 or 392. You didn't mention a trans, that could complicate things a bit if you have a diesel trans ratio. Otherwise anything else will require adapters or other expenses.

Two things to look at:

1. I'm not sure about the sd33 bolt pattern. Another member will have to chime in.

2. That trans was offered in close and wide ratio. You need to check that out first. Also you need to check your rear ends and figure out what ratios you have. Diesels have a different power curve than gas motors. If it isn't right, you will have a dog. Grimmjeeper is a great calculator to play around with.

You didn't mention how much it was? If it is really cheap, then who cares.

Yeah its cheap an awesome deal.. I going to buy ether way really ( that's if haven't screwed my self by forgetting about time differences) but its got 3:73's I'm not sure about the tranny. Will looking to it if I pick it up. Again if I didn't screw myself. Ugh!

Yeah should be cool either way. Tons of options. Great platform. Post pics when you pick it up.

For sure. Luck is on my side going to pick it up Saturday. And we May have lead on a sd-33. Will know more tomorrow. Thanks for your info btw

Not so sure one of the IH motors would just drop right in, well they will drop right in, but motor and tranny mounts will probably not be in the right places. Have 258 striaght six in mine, and the motor and tranny mounts are definetly located in different spots on the frame than the IH eights or fours. If you look in the parts manuals, the frame numbers are different to. No biggy, just need to to some welding.

As far as the tranny goes, if it is a late model it will be a t19 wide (6.32 first gear) or close (4.0 first gear). T18s have no first gear synchros and you don't want one of those. The wides are more scarse and are what you want for crawling, a lot of the diesels had them. The difference will be in the bell housings, which separate from the transmissions. If you go gas, you should be able to do some horse trading becuase the IH engine bell housings are much easier to locate.

If it's automatic, then it's a mopar big block 727 trans that had an sd33 adapter on it. On the sd33 diesel motor, also search Jeep cj10 and cj10a tugs.

Here is what I found.

1. The manual tranny regardless of type is mounted further back than the gas v-8 (I also believe that this applies to the I-6 gas) not a big deal if you can weld the cross member is the same.

2. The bell housing will not mate to your an IH engine you will need a gas bell housing (the automatic is not a bb mopar
pattern)

3. The motor mounts for a sd-33 or sd33-t and an IH sv are mounted in the same place on the frame.

I would caution you against going with the sd-33 is underpowered for these trucks the sd33-t is mildly better but parts are going to be a problem and if you need to rebuild either of these engines they get very pricey very quickly(4-6k).

Without going through the problems with a different engine swap I would use an IH engine but update it with a efi set up.
